Water-based primers are favoured by converters worldwide because they are safe for the environment and workers, promote adhesion to many substrates and extrudes, and enhance performance in a wide variety of extrusion coating and extrusion lamination applications.

When trying to manufacture structures with multiple layers, a chemical primer is usually needed to improve bonds between a substrate and a coating, such as an extrudate, or ink. Primers can also help to enhance barrier properties, aesthetics, and overall performance of the finished structure.

Primer application is not limited to gravure systems. Many converters have found that smooth roll applicators are also well-suited to apply MICA water-based primers. A smooth roll applicator effectively delivers thin coat weights of low viscosity primers, such as MICA A-131-X.
